$2,500 In Fines For Hunting Deer In Claireville Conservation Area

Two Toronto men have been fined a total of $2,500 and had their hunting licences suspended for one year after being convicted of illegally hunting deer at night and trespassing in Claireville Conservation Area.

Manuel Domingues and Licinio Nunes both pleaded guilty to illegally having a firearm at night and trespassing for the purpose of hunting deer. Domingues was previously convicted of trespassing to hunt.

The court heard that on November 16, 2008, Peel Regional Police responded to a complaint that two people were walking with crossbows on conservation lands owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority near an industrial area in the City of Brampton. The Ministry of Natural Resources has been investigating complaints about this property for several years. An investigation by the ministry and Peel Regional Police, with help from the enforcement team of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, revealed that the men accessed the conservation area through a hydro right-of-way.

Justice of the Peace Albert Chang Alloy heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Brampton, on June 22, 2009.
