Charges And Suspension For Moose Hunter

A Midland-area man has pleaded guilty to discharging his firearm in a travelled roadway and discharging his firearm carelessly, without due care and attention for people or property.

Peter Parent has been fined $500 for discharging his firearm down a roadway and $1,000 for discharging his firearm carelessly. His hunting privileges in Ontario were suspended for one year.

Court heard that on October 23, 2008, Parent shot a bull moose that was standing on a well-traveled road in the Sundridge area. In doing so, he shot towards a stop sign. Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers and the Ontario Provincial Police jointly investigated the incident.

Justice of the Peace Mike Kittler heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sundridge, on July 9, 2009.

The public is reminded that it is illegal to shoot from, down or across a road while hunting as it is unsafe and has resulted in accidents, including fatalities. Those convicted of careless hunting automatically lose their hunting privileges and are required to successfully complete a hunter education course before being allowed to apply for a new hunting licence.
