MOOSE HUNTERS FINED $3,000 FOR VIOLATING PARTY HUNTING LAWS
Four moose hunters have been convicted of offences related to party hunting and fined a total of $3,000.
The hunters pleaded guilty and were charged for offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
Michael Miesner, 33, of Pine City, Minnesota, was fined $1,500 for unlawfully hunting a bull moose. Robert Greig, 55, and Harlan Horton, 50, both of Pine City, Minnesota, and Daniele Passalent, 73, of Grimsby, Ontario, were fined $500 each for attempting to attach a seal to the bull moose.
Court heard that on October 14, 2008, the group was moose hunting in the Upsala area of Wildlife Management Unit 12B. Miesner, the hunter who shot the bull moose, was more than five kilometres away from the moose tag holder when the moose was killed. Miesner was unable to communicate immediately with his hunting party members, including the tag holder. This is contrary to the party hunting rules under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act regulations.
Justice of the Peace Marcel Donio heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Thunder Bay, on May 13, 2009.
