$1,500 FINE FOR SHOOTING WRONG MOOSE

An Ontario hunter has been fined $1,500 for unlawfully shooting a cow moose.

Harvey Thain, 49, of Ear Falls pleaded guilty to shooting a cow moose when he was licensed to only hunt a calf moose. He was charged under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and is prohibited from hunting in Ontario for one year. The moose was forfeited to the Crown and subsequently donated to the Red Lake Homeless Shelter.

Court heard that on November 26, 2008, Thain misidentified and shot the moose.

Justice of the Peace Marjorie Pasloski heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Red Lake, on April 8, 2009.

The ministry reminds hunters to immediately report animals shot accidentally.
