FINE AND HUNTING BAN FOR CARELESS HUNTING
April 21, 2009
A Midland man has been fined $1,000 and banned from hunting for a year after shooting his common-law wife in the lower legs while hunting.
Norman Green, 59, pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm carelessly without due care and attention for people. He is also required to take a hunter safety course prior to the reinstatement of his hunting privileges.
Court heard that on October
13, 2008, a Ministry of Natural Resources Timmins District conservation officer
responded to a call from the Ontario Provincial Police to investigate a hunting-related
incident involving a firearm. It was determined that while hunting, Green had
fired his shotgun at a grouse that was in line with the victim, striking her
in the lower legs and feet. Over thirty pellets were lodged in the victim's
legs.
Justice of the Peace Ted Hodgins heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice,
Timmins, on April 9, 2009.
The public is reminded that a conservation officer must be notified as soon as possible if an injury requiring treatment by a physician is caused by the discharge of a firearm while hunting.
