FINED $3,000 FOR HUNTING COW MOOSE WITHOUT A VALIDATION SEAL

April 7, 2009

A Hearst man has been fined $3,000 and has had all hunting privileges suspended for two years for hunting moose without a licence.

Denis Grandmont, 46, pleaded guilty to the offence.

On October 11, 2008, Grandmont was moose hunting in an unorganized territory near Hearst. Grandmont had a bull moose validation seal, but he chose to harvest a cow moose. Later, acting on tips from the public, conservation officers investigated and found that Grandmont and the person with the cow moose seal were not party hunting at the time. Later, another person used their cow moose seal on the animal.

Justice of the Peace Jean-Marie Blier heard the case in the Provincial Offences Court, Kapuskasing, on March 24, 2009.

A person may hunt moose, deer or black bear in a party, provided they follow several conditions to ensure that the hunt is conducted in a lawful manner. Hunters are encouraged to review the 2008-2009 Hunting Regulations Summary or speak to a conservation officer before going into the field to ensure a full understanding of all hunting laws.
