MOOSE SHOT DURING CLOSED SEASON COSTS MEN $6,000

April 2, 2009

Two Haliburton County men have been fined a total of $6,000 for shooting and transporting a cow moose during the closed season.

George Medley, 47, of Haliburton, pleaded guilty to shooting a cow moose during the closed season, and possessing and transporting the illegally killed moose. He was fined $4,000. In addition, his hunting licence was suspended for five years and his rifle was forfeited to the Crown.

Derwin Barry, 50, of West Guilford, pleaded guilty to transporting illegally-killed wildlife and was fined $2,000.

Court heard that conservation officers, responding to a TIPS-MNR complaint, contacted the two men at Barry's residence after the men returned from a week-long deer hunt in Livingstone Township. Officers located a quartered moose wrapped in a tarp in the back of Barry's pick-up truck. Medley, the passenger, admitted to killing the moose, hiding the meat in a creek, and wrapping it in the tarp before he and Barry made the trip home.

Justice of the Peace Diane Jackson heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Minden, on April 2, 2009.
